Alishma Cattery was started in 1992 in Cairns Queensland. It began like many foundation stories, with the first visit to a local cat show. Whilst wandering around admiring all the cats, I came upon the striking and exquisite Birman .... that was it for me, love at first site. I did more research and the more I read the more I fell in love with the Birman. It was then that I decided I wanted to breed and show this stunning breed.
I was given the opportunity of rescuing some registered breeding stock of British Shorthairs and whilst I enjoyed learning about the British, the love of the Birman was still very very strong. After a few litters of British, I decided that I was still going to focus on Birmans.
We got our first Birman girl Page Ma–Teesha ("Tessa") in 1994 from Page Birmans in Brisbane. Tessa was an absolutely gorgeous seal point with wonderful eye colour. When Tessa was due to start breeding I was fortunate enough to use Bonniebrae Jardene, a seal point boy. They produced a sweet little blue point male after which time I was given the opportunity of buying Jardene. We had many gorgeous kids from these two beautiful cats and it is because of Tessa and Jardene that Alishma Birmans was finally started.
We moved to Hervey Bay, Queensland and Alishma Birmans has grown since. We now have many more gorgeous Birmans to help strengthen our breeding program and we owe a great deal of thanks to the many breeders who have entrusted us with their babies.
Our cattery is really a family establishment, hubby Roy, myself (Louise) and our children, Sinead (17) and Rhys (15) (all pictured above), all get involved with all aspects of breeding, from cleaning to spending hours playing with the little birman cherubs.
Alishma Cattery is registered with the Queensland Feline Association and a member of the Birman Cat Fanciers Queensland.
